Basics Of Retail Design

Written by John MacMill on September 18, 2009 – 12:05 pm -

The primary function of a retail space is to assist the buyers in purchasing the exhibited goods without difficulty and to allow the retailer to draw buyers to the goods for effective selling. This is the reason why the design of retail areas and shops, that is the retail design, is comprised of aspects of graphic design, ergonomics and promotion, along with other customary features of interior designing and architecture.

It is essential for a retail space to be designed taking into consideration the particular needs it is meant to cater to. Art galleries and supermarkets serve as good examples of retail spaces that have entirely distinct requirements for their design. A number of factors need to be taken into account while developing the design, such as the kind of products being sold, the degree of involvement of shop assistants in the purchasing process, the number of products that have to be put on display, and so on. Some retail spaces only need to display some samples of merchandise, on the other hand, others allow trial of the items by the buyers prior to sale. The retail design adopted would therefore differ accordingly.

In addition to the technical details of a retail design, the attractiveness of the retail area from the point of view of the buyers should also be considered. It is important that the atmosphere of the retail shop looks amicable to the buyers so that they are motivated to purchase the items. The design of the retail environment has a big role to play in this and it should include in-store advertising to emphasize the brand so that the chance of a sale increases.

Moreover, the retail space should have a long lasting impression on the mind of the consumers, and should motivate them to return and make further purchases. A good retail designer will hence give extra attention to the ambience of the store and make sure that the customers have a pleasant and comfortable experience.

In order to create an effective retail design, it is essential to have a good working knowledge of customer psychology, space planning, marketing etc. It is essential that the owner of the retail space comprehends these concepts in order to inform the designer about his specific needs and the retail designer understands them to properly work as per the requirements.

Finally, it is not only the designing of interiors of the store that requires careful attention. The outside design and look of the store should also be appealing to draw buyers to the store so that they enter and look at the goods.
